As one of the most prominent contemporary artists of post-painterly abstraction, British artist Ian Davenport has injected new life into the practice of painting. He creates complex colour arrangements in vertical lines by pouring gloss paint from heavy-duty syringes, and then tilting the work.
The 3m x 8m acrylic painting “Colorcade” at HANA is Davenport’s first major outdoor commission in Southeast Asia. The chromatic sequence is arranged “so it might ebb and waver, or pop out at you and then recede”, creating an almost “musical and rhythmic quality”.
